Before the test

Collection and isolation precautions must follow the clinical/public-health pathway; do not present at a routine clinic if infectious TB is suspected without calling ahead.

Clinical interpretation

Laboratory results should be interpreted by a qualified professional using the correct reference interval, method, symptoms, history and other findings. A normal or abnormal value rarely confirms or excludes a condition by itself.

01

Why the test is performed

To detect genetic material from the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex more rapidly than culture.

02

What the test is used for

Supporting diagnosis of active tuberculosis and, for some assays, detecting selected drug-resistance markers.

03

How the test is performed

The specimen is processed in a controlled area, nucleic acid is extracted or released, and target sequences are amplified and detected with internal controls.

04

Conditions and diseases considered

Used for suspected pulmonary or extrapulmonary tuberculosis. A negative result may not exclude TB, especially with low organism burden.

05

Recommended further tests

Smear microscopy, mycobacterial culture and full susceptibility testing, chest imaging and public-health or specialist assessment.
